FAQ

Is teeth whitening safe?

While at-home whitening and whitening performed by people who are not dentists can carry real risks, teeth whitening at SmileShop is completely safe. Dr Mark Levi is a dental specialist, with over 30 years of experience.  He will tell you up-front what can be achieved, and what can’t. He would never perform a treatment that would compromise the health or stability of the teeth. There is absolutely no enamel damage when teeth are whitened professionally. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening performed by a qualified dentist is the safest and most economical cosmetic dental treatment available.

Is teeth whitening painful?

Not if it’s done using the right equipment, and gel.
Unlike common whitening treatments, the Smartbleach 3LT and KTP Laser systems generate minimal heat, and cause virtually no tooth dehydration, meaning they cause little or no discomfort.
If you already have sensitive teeth, please contact us for some Tooth Mousse*. Tooth Mousse* minimises sensitivity while doing all sorts of other good things to your teeth. We recommend using Tooth Mousse* for a week or two leading up to your appointment.
*Do not use Tooth Mousse if you have a milk protein and/ or hydroxybenzoates allergy.

What type of teeth whitening treatments do you offer in Darlinghurst?

We offer three unique treatments to suit a range of budgets and needs.

    • Fitted Trays – Over two visits, reusable custom fitted trays are created and supplied that specifically fit your teeth. You use these trays, and the approved ph Neutral gel we supply, for 15 minutes a day to slowly and safely whiten your teeth to the level you wish.
    • Smartbleach 3LT – The Smartbleach 3LT treatment uses a pure Green light source to activate a patented Red gel to whiten teeth without the use of heat, meaning that it is much safer for the health of your teeth than other whitening treatments.
    • Smartbleach KTP Laser – The Smartbleach KTP Laser whitening system is state-of-the-art teeth whitening. It will provide outstanding, long lasting whitening results, not only on healthy teeth but also on non-vital teeth (such as those that have had a root canal), antibiotic-stained teeth, damaged teeth and teeth which have not responded to other whitening treatments. Another fantastic benefit of the system is that the precision laser can be used to treat single discoloured teeth.

Why don't you use Zoom whitening?

Zoom treatment is old technology, and nothing has been done to remove the pain and colour rebound the treatment often causes.
We use Smartbleach treatment because it uses light, not heat, to activate, and doesn’t dehydrate your teeth during treatment.

Which teeth whitening treatment is best for me?

Every patient is unique, which is why we encourage you to get in contact with us to discuss your situation, ask questions, and get the knowledge on which teeth whitening treatment best suits your requirements and budget.

Who performs the teeth whitening?

Dr Mark Levi will personally perform your teeth whitening. You can fully relax, knowing you are in the capable hands of an expert with over 30 years of experience as a dentist. We don’t cut corners with your smile by using lesser or un-trained people

Can you whiten a single stained tooth?

Yes! We offer the Smartbleach KTP Laser -the only whitening system that is able to whiten single teeth. Even teeth that no other whitening system can fix.

How many teeth whitening treatments will I need?

All our Smartbleach treatments are single session, with results that last years.
Custom fitted trays are usually two visits.

What is Tooth Mousse*?

Tooth Mousse* is a topically applied crème containing fluoride and a milk-derived protein, which bind calcium and phosphate to strengthen and protect tooth surfaces. Using Tooth Mousse* before treatment prevents tooth sensitivity and using it afterward increases the effectiveness of the treatment.
For trivia buffs, CPP-ACP was developed at the School of Dental Science at the University of Melbourne Victoria/ Australia. Recaldent™ is a trade mark used under license. Recaldent™ (CPP-ACP) is derived from milk casein.
Do not use Tooth Mousse* if you have a milk protein and/ or hydroxybenzoates allergy.

What if my teeth look too white?

We are very cognisant of the effects of teeth whitening, and the emotion often invested in the results. We would never let a patient walk out of our offices with unnaturally white teeth. Our teeth whitening treatments are designed to give you a natural looking white tooth colour. That’s also one of the advantages of  the Smartbleach system – no dehydration of the teeth effectively stops the “blue” effect you can get with other treatments.

Will I need maintenance trays?

The Smartbleach whitening system doesn’t require the use of maintenance trays.

Is there anything I need to do after my teeth whitening treatment?

We provide our teeth whitening patients with a checklist of the do’s and don’ts of food and drink after treatment as part of our service.
Generally it takes three days of being careful with what you eat and drink before things can return to normal, for the next few years.
That’s not a bad trade-off for the joy a nice white smile will give you.

Smartbleach 3LT

What happens during a Smartbleach 3LT teeth whitening session?

First, the teeth are cleaned and dried, and a protective coating is applied to the gums. Then the Smartbleach red gel is applied, and a specially designed illuminating mouthpiece is positioned in the mouth. The red gel is then activated by the pure green laser-like light of the Smartbleach 3LT. A Smartbleach 3LT teeth whitening treatment generally takes around 45 minutes, making it one of the fastest in-office teeth whitening treatments available.

Why is Smartbleach 3LT better than other teeth whitening methods?

The patented red teeth whitening gel, which contains a special, non-acidic preparation of hydrogen peroxide reacts with pure green light to create powerful whitening effects without damaging the tooth enamel. There is virtually no dehydration of the tooth structure, meaning there is none of the loss of whitening through rehydration which is common with lower quality treatments.

Can Smartbleach 3LT whiten antibiotic stained teeth or non-vital teeth?

It may, but the KTP Laser would be the preferred choice. The KTP Laser system will whiten any natural tooth, and can be used on individual teeth.

Can Smartbleach 3LT whiten false teeth, veneers and fillings?

The Smartbleach 3LT treatment will not whiten caps, crowns or fillings. These may need to be replaced if they no longer match the rest of your teeth after a whitening treatment.

Does Smartbleach 3LT teeth whitening heightening tooth sensitivity?

No. Most patients feel nothing. Some patients report a tingling sensation during the treatment. No anaesthetic injections are needed, and no needles are used.

Smartbleach with KTP Laser

What happens during a KTP Laser teeth whitening session?

Dr Levi applies the patented KTP gel to your teeth, then shines the KTP Laser onto the gel. A specific interaction between the pure green KTP Laser and the patented red gel whitens the teeth. This gel is exclusive to the KTP system and is the reason for the superior results.

Why is KTP Laser better than other teeth whitening methods?

The KTP Laser treatment has been developed in Europe over the last fourteen years. Studies have shown it causes no internal or external damage to treated teeth. KTP Laser does not heat the pulp of the tooth as other teeth whitening systems can, so it protects the teeth during the treatment.

Can KTP Laser whiten antibiotic stained teeth or non-vital teeth?

Yes – this system is able to provide outstanding, long-lasting whitening results on non-vital teeth (such as those that have had a root canal), antibiotic-stained teeth, damaged teeth and teeth which have not responded to other whitening treatments. Another fantastic benefit of the system is that the precision laser can be used to treat single discoloured teeth.

Can KTP Laser whiten false teeth, veneers and fillings?

The KTP Laser treatment will not whiten caps, crowns or fillings. These may need to be replaced if they no longer match the rest of your teeth after a whitening treatment.

Does KTP Laser teeth whitening heighten tooth sensitivity?

No. Most patients feel nothing. Some patients report a tingling sensation during the treatment. No anaesthetic injections are needed, and no needles are used.
