Dental crowns are used to repair a tooth that is severely decayed, broken, or brittle. Once placed, a crown is permanently cemented to the tooth and acts as the tooth’s outer surface and is indistinguishable from a natural tooth. Dental crowns require no surgery and placing them is a painless treatment that takes two or three visits.
During your first visit to The Smile Shop, Dr Levi and our team will assess the damage to your tooth and advise whether a dental crown, a dental filling, or another option is the best possible treatment for your mouth. The majority of patients need crowns to:
- Restore or make changes to a tooth’s shape
- Repair and/or reinforce a structurally compromised tooth
- Improve the appearance of teeth (including colour, shape and even alignment).
Your dental crown will be made at a specialty dental laboratory based on an impression of your tooth taken by Dr Levi. If the root and base of your tooth are strong, Dr Levi will prepare the tooth for a crown by removing a small portion of the enamel and dentin. If your tooth is severely decayed or weak then it may be necessary to insert a post into the tooth to support the crown.
It takes between seven and fourteen days for your crown to be created. When it is ready, Dr Levi will cement it over and onto the remaining tooth structure. Once in place, it will be both functionally and aesthetically indistinguishable from your natural teeth.
